
Common Hippopotamus
Fact:
The hippopotamus is recognizable by its barrelshaped
torso, enormous mouth and teeth, nearly hairless body,
stubby legs and tremendous size. It is the third
largest land mammal by weight after the White
rhinoceros and elephant.
Habitat:
Semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove
swamps.
Threats:
Habitat loss, loss of access to fresh water,
unregulated hunting and poaching for their meat and
ivory canine teeth.
Range:
Sub-Saharan Africa.
